The Jewish community in Macedonia observes Yom HaShoah

Yom HaShoah, the Holocaust Remembrance Day, was observed at the Holocaust Memorial Center for the Jews of Macedonia on Monday.

The Holocaust Remembrance Day is observed as Israel’s day of commemoration for the approximately six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust as a result of the actions carried out by Nazi Germany and its accessories, and for the Jewish resistance in that period.

Macedonian Jewish Community president Berta Romano-Nikolic said Yom HaShoah marked the day of heroism in the Warsaw ghetto and the suffering of the victims, who rebelled knowing it was a lost battle.

“The Warsaw ghetto is a unique example of pride, defiance, resistance against evil and destruction. They demonstrated dignity of the human being that opposes death even when its imminent. Such death is the symbol of the Jewish struggle against the Nazi terror and its grandeur gives it a universal, humane importance”, said Nikolic.

Holocaust Fund of the Jews from Macedonia president Liljana Mizrahi said Yom Hashoah is a day of human heroism, dignity and disobedience.

“As of 11 March 2011, the ashes of the 7,144 Jews from Macedonia rest in the Holocaust Memorial Center for the Jews of Macedonia. This is the place of their eternal resting and a point where the foundations towards fighting against any racial, religious or any type of intolerance are laid”, said Mizrahi.

The event also included the opening of a children’s exhibit “Holocaust through Children’s Eyes”.
